Glacial isostatic adjustment in the static gravity field of Fennoscandia

چکیده
In the central part of Fennoscandia, the crust is currently rising, because of the delayed response of the viscous mantle to melting of the Late Pleistocene ice sheet. This process, called Glacial Isostatic Adjustment (GIA), causes a negative anomaly in the present-day static gravity field as isostatic equilibrium has not been reached yet. Several studies have tried to use this anomaly as a constraint on models of GIA, but the uncertainty in crustal and upper mantle structures has not been fully taken into account. Therefore, our aim is to revisit this using improved crustal models and compensation techniques. We find that in contrast with other studies, the effect of crustal anomalies on the gravity field cannot be effectively removed, because of uncertainties in the crustal and upper mantle density models. Our second aim is to estimate the effects on geophysical models, which assume isostatic equilibrium, after correcting the observed gravity field with numerical models for GIA. We show that correcting for GIA in geophysical modelling can give changes of several kilometer in the thickness of structural layers of modeled lithosphere, which is a small but significant correction. Correcting the gravity field for GIA prior to assuming isostatic equilibrium and inferring density anomalies might be relevant in other areas with ongoing postglacial rebound such as North America and the polar regions.

The poorly known correction for the ongoing deformation of the solid Earth caused by glacial isostatic adjustment (GIA) is a major uncertainty in determining the mass balance of the Antarctic ice sheet from measurements of satellite gravimetry and to a lesser extent satellite altimetry. In the past decade, much progress has been made in consistently modeling ice sheet and solid Earth interactio...

[1] A formal inverse procedure is used to infer radial mantle viscosity profiles from several observations related to the glacial isostatic adjustment process. The data sets consist of Late Pleistocene and Holocene sea level data from Scandinavia, the Barents Sea, Central Europe, Canada, and the far field, as well as observations of changes in the Earth’s rotation and gravitational field, and p...

متن کاملGlacio-isostatic adjustment in Fennoscandia revisited
The theory of load-induced relaxation of the layered Maxwell half-space is applied to the study of glacioisostatic adjustment in Fennoscandia. The interpretation uses emergence data from Angermanland (Sweden) and uplift-rate data from the Gulf of Bothnia. With mantle viscosity fixed at 10 Pa s, the data can be explained by an earth model characterized by (a) an elastic surface layer of conventi...

Recently, Morner discussed his model of glacio-isostatic compensation in the light of new seismological models of the upper mantle below Fennoscandia (Miimer, 1990). He concluded that the P-wave velocity distribution is in “full agreement” with his estimate of the viscosity distribution as inferred from glacio-isostatic relaxation. Whereas the consistency of seismological and geodynamical earth...
